Cricut Pop up Flower Card

I created this pop-up flower card template for a fun easy cardmaking project using the Cricut cutting machine.

I don’t know why but pop up cards are just so much more fun than the flatter two-dimensional kind. Maybe it’s the surprise element?

I’ve been wanting to make a single flower pop up card for a while but it took a while because the design was somewhat complicated.

I’ve seen a lot of flower pop up card designs online and they all seem super complicated with multiple slits and hidden sleeves. It was just all too confusing so I just designed my own.

My design by no means is super easy. It is the same tab that you just keep gluing over and over so relatively speaking, it’s not too bad. So if you’re up for a small challenge, let’s get started!

Materials for DIY flower pop up card

Cardstock – I like to use a light to medium weight cardstock with colored cores for the flower portion. Here are some of my favorite brands.

• Assorted Starter Pack – Basic assorted colors, great starter pack, perfect weight for most papercraft projects
• Cricut Joy Insert Card Packs – You don’t have to use these with the Cricut Joy, they are nice material kids for cardmaking.
• Cardstock Warehouse Brand on Amazon – I love the quality of all the matte-colored cardstock with Cardstock Warehouse. It is my go-to brand for individual matte colors that I might need
• Poptone Assorted Variety Pack – This is the perfect peppy assortment of colors of heavy cardstock. It’s a heavy cardstock assortment with colors I actually use frequently for cardmaking.
• Seasonal Assorted Variety Pack – This is a slight variation on the Poptone assortment and has a quite few neutrals that complement almost any accent color.
• Stardream Metallics Line – For paper crafts, the Stardream line is the go-to for a metallic shimmer finish. It is the perfect sheen to make any project pop. The core is also colored is which hard to find for metallic paper.

Glue – I usually don’t like using polymer-based glues for cardmaking because it warps the paper. However, for this project, it does provide the best grip after it has dried. You could also use a hot glue gun.

• Art Glitter Glue – All-purpose non-toxic polymer glue with a fine tip, dries fast with minimal paper warping.
• Hot Glue Gun – My favorite cordless hot glue gun, an essential for fast petal to petal gluing

Cutting Machine – I use a Cricut machines and accessories for beginners for more info.

How to make the flower pop up card

Step 1: First cut out the pop up flower card template

I like to use a fresh light grip mat to cut this project. It makes it easier for cleanup. You can also do different color combinations with the stamen and leaves. A monochromatic looks is also great too.

Step 2: Fold all the flower petal strips in half and glue the tab

Try to align the petals as best as possible. Fold the tab over and glue in place. Pinch and hold for a few seconds.

Do the same for all the stamen strips.

Step 3: Glue the folded petal strips together.

This is the most complicated step but once you figure it out, the rest is easy. The petals range from the shorted (vertically on the petal) on the outer most ring to the tallest petal as the inner most ring.

Start with the widest/shortest petal strip and insert the next petal strip inside of it. Fold the base tabs outwards.

Glue the base tab to the outside of the outer most petal strip. Not all the tabs align perfectly. I just center aligned the middle most petal and let the other fall into place.

Do this again for inner most layer of petal strips (tallest).

Step 4: Glue the Stamen strips in place

Do the same tab gluing action for the center pieces. This time, they decrease in size with the tallest and widest piece enveloping the smaller ones.

At this point, you will have a thick stack of tabs that may be having trouble staying together. I like to use a paper clip to hold it in place while it’s drying.

Step 5: Glue the pop up flower onto the card base

Align the base of the pop up flower assembly to the crease of the card.

Glue only the middle most petals on both sides.

Close the card and place something heavy on it while it is drying so everything stays in place.

That’s about it. Wasn’t too bad was it?
